This week I’m sitting down with Tara Davies a.k.a. Taradactyl. Tara was recently voted “Best Club DJ” in the recent Creative Loafing ‘Best Of Atlanta’ 2019 issue. She also appeared in the September 2019 issue of Atlanta Magazine in a feature guiding readers through a perfect weekend in Atlanta. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Tara for the last few years; first as a friend, then as a vendor/artist. I’ve seen Tara’s record collection firsthand & it is ridiculously impressive… think the library in Beauty and the Beast, but sub out vinyl for books.
Tara DJ’d a number of parties here at Sun in my Belly, most recently at our Valentine’s “Broken Hearts Club”. She’ll be coming back to DJ Brunch on Sunday, October 6th from 12-2pm. Perfect Autumn weather, our brand new patio and Atlanta’s reigning Best Club DJ.
Just marinate on that image as we dig into the interview and get to know Tara a little better…
Q: Music or podcasts – what are you currently listening to?
A: Music! I’m always and forever on the hunt for a new obsession. Right now you’ll see Laurence Pike, Black Midi and local ATLiens Stefan Ringer and TWINS in my recently obsessed list.
Q: TV or movies – (assuming you have time to watch) what’s been your favorite series or film over the last year?
A: I just finished the latest season of Stranger Things and I really loved Midsommar.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about Atlanta?
A: The people!
Q: Favorite city/destination (other than Atlanta)?
A: I really love Chicago. I go there often whenever there’s a good show or fest with a lineup that I’m dying to see.
Q: How long have you been working in your current industry?
A: I’ve been djing for a little over 12 years and I’ve been in tech for 6. 🙂
Q: Why did you get into this business?
A: I’m obsessed with music and really wanted to find a good dance party. I couldn’t find one in my hometown, so I made my own and I’m still at it.
Q: What is your “mission statement”? What would it be if you don’t have one?
A: Hmm I don’t really have one, but I do what I love with no apologies, so I guess that’ll be it!
Q: What’s your favorite thing about your job?
A: Seeing people dancing their hearts out to the music I’m playing.
Q: Who (if anyone) locally has inspired/influenced you in your industry?
A: There are so many djs and artists in Atlanta that inspire me with their passion and love for music — Geographic North, Haunted Birthday Records, VLSC Crew, Deep South ATL – the list goes on and on.
Q: What’s your favorite Atlanta restaurant and/or Atlanta owned business?
A: This is so hard! There are so many establishments that I frequent and love so much with an intense loyalty! I love MJQ and Mary’s!
Q: Tell us something obscure/odd/weird about you and/or your business that we probably don’t know…
A: I used to be in an all-girl band called Trapper Keeper that was very much in the same vein as Peaches, Gravy Train!!!, and Le Tigre.
Q: Where do you see yourself/your business in 10 years? (feel free to be wildly ambitious)
A: Probably retired from the club scene and making weird music at home.
Q: Beatles or Rolling Stones?
A: The Zombies
Q: Anything else you’d like to add about yourself or your business?
A: You can find me djing every Saturday at MJQ or every third Friday at The Music Room. Come dance with me!
I’d just like to wrap this up by thanking Tara for her time. You can find her on Instagram and Twitter @djtaradactyl or on her website HERE
Stay tuned for more interviews in this series featuring our fantastic friends. Can’t wait to see you again real soon 🙂
